Why rodents move indoors during San Diego's cooler months

Cooler fall evenings send roof rats and mice into attics, garages, and crawl spaces across San Diego County. Here is what to watch for and how to keep them out.

Although San Diego enjoys mild weather year-round, cooler evenings during the fall encourage rodents to seek warm, protected places to nest. Attics, garages, crawl spaces, and wall voids provide easy access to food, shelter, and water, making homes an attractive place for roof rats and mice as the seasons change.

Many homeowners assume rodent problems only happen in colder parts of the country. In reality, fall is one of the busiest times of year for rodent activity throughout San Diego County. As nighttime temperatures begin to drop, rats and mice start looking for safe places to nest before winter arrives.

At Bite Away Termite & Pest Control, we often see an increase in rodent service calls throughout the fall, especially in communities near open space, hiking trails, canyons, and mature landscaping. Catching these problems early can help prevent costly damage and keep a small issue from becoming a major infestation.

Why rodents choose your home

Rodents are constantly searching for three things: food, water, and shelter.

As outdoor food sources become less reliable, homes provide everything they need to survive. Warm attics, garages filled with storage boxes, pet food, bird seed, and even small plumbing leaks create an inviting environment.

Roof rats, one of the most common rodents found in San Diego, are excellent climbers. They frequently travel along tree branches, fences, utility lines, and rooftops before finding small openings that lead into attics.

Even tiny gaps around roof vents, utility penetrations, garage doors, or plumbing lines can become entry points.

Signs you may have rodents

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you'll always see a rodent if one has entered your home. More often than not, homeowners notice the evidence before they ever spot the animal itself.

Some of the most common warning signs include:

  • Scratching or scurrying sounds in the attic after dark
  • Rodent droppings in the garage or attic
  • Chewed cardboard boxes or food packaging
  • Damaged insulation or nesting material
  • Grease marks along walls or pipes
  • Unusual pet behavior, especially dogs or cats focused on walls or ceilings

If you notice any of these signs, it's important to schedule an inspection before the population grows.

Why rodents are more common in certain San Diego neighborhoods

Not every neighborhood experiences the same level of rodent activity.

Homes in areas such as Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Ramona, Scripps Ranch, and communities bordering canyons or open space often experience increased rodent pressure because wildlife corridors provide easy access to residential neighborhoods.

Even coastal communities like Encinitas, Del Mar, and Carlsbad can experience rodent issues due to mature landscaping, fruit trees, and dense vegetation.

Regardless of where you live, any home can become vulnerable if entry points aren't properly sealed.

How to help keep rodents out

A few simple maintenance tasks can significantly reduce your risk of a rodent infestation.

Trim tree branches so they remain at least 10 feet away from your roof whenever possible. Store pet food and bird seed in sealed containers, keep outdoor trash bins tightly closed, and inspect your home's exterior for gaps around vents, pipes, and utility lines.

Weather stripping around garage doors should also be checked regularly, as worn or damaged seals can create easy entry points.

While these preventative measures are helpful, they may not completely eliminate the risk, especially in neighborhoods with high rodent activity.

Why professional inspections matter

Many rodent infestations begin long before homeowners realize there's a problem.

During professional inspections, our technicians look beyond the obvious signs. We inspect common entry points, identify conditions that attract rodents, and recommend practical solutions to help prevent future infestations.

Addressing rodent activity early not only protects your home but can also help prevent damage to insulation, wiring, stored belongings, and other areas that are expensive to repair.

Protect your home before winter

Fall is one of the best times to inspect your home for signs of rodent activity. Taking action before rodents become established can save time, money, and frustration later in the season.
